Ninja TV: Lanterns

Today marks the premiere of Lanterns, a new HBO series and one of the key projects in the rebooted DC Universe.
The story follows two Green Lanterns: the legendary Hal Jordan and his new partner, John Stewart.
Instead of a typical large-scale superhero adventure, the creators have opted for a dark detective story set primarily on Earth.

What is the series about?
Experienced Green Lantern Hal Jordan is tasked with training rookie John Stewart. Soon, the two find themselves in the small town of Rushville, Nebraska, where they begin investigating a mysterious murder.
At first, the case appears to be an ordinary crime, but the investigation gradually leads the Lanterns to a much greater threat. And the residents of the small town have plenty of secrets of their own.

Why is it worth watching?
Lanterns is noticeably different from most DC superhero projects. The creators focus not only on the heroes’ powers and the cosmic side of the universe, but also on the detective story, the relationship between two very different partners, and the atmosphere of a small American town.
That does not mean the series will be short on sci-fi: viewers can expect cosmic worlds, the Green Lantern Corps, and familiar characters from the comics. Sinestro and Guy Gardner will also appear, with Nathan Fillion returning in the latter role.

Who created the series?
Lanterns was created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. Mundy is known for his work on Ozark, Lindelof is one of the co-creators of Lost and the creator of HBO’s Watchmen, while Tom King has spent many years writing DC comics.
The series is part of the first chapter of the new DC Universe, Gods and Monsters.

Who stars in the series?
Hal Jordan is played by Kyle Chandler, known for Friday Night Lights and Manchester by the Sea.
John Stewart is played by Aaron Pierre, whom viewers may know from Rebel Ridge and Mufasa: The Lion King.
The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, and Nathan Fillion.
