The New Spider-Man Is Now in Cinemas!

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has arrived in cinemas this week. It is the fourth solo film about Peter Parker starring Tom Holland and the continuation of one of the most popular stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Almost five years have passed since the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Its ending completely changed the hero’s life: the entire world forgot who Peter Parker was, while the people closest to him began new lives without him.

Peter now lives alone and devotes all his time to fighting crime. However, he will not be able to remain simply a friendly neighbourhood hero for long. The pressure Spider-Man faces every day triggers a surprising physical transformation that he may not have the power to control.

What Is the Film About?

After the events of No Way Home, the world no longer remembers Peter Parker. Even MJ and Ned, his closest friends, continue their lives without him.

Peter decides not to interfere and focuses on protecting New York. He now patrols the streets full-time and operates as a completely independent hero.

However, the pressure of loneliness, having to watch his friends move on and the constant fight against crime gradually begin to change Peter. At the same time, a mysterious and extremely dangerous enemy whom nobody is able to see appears in the city.

To stop the new threat and protect the people he cares about, Spider-Man will have to understand the transformation taking place within him and decide what kind of hero he wants to become.

A New Chapter for Spider-Man

Brand New Day begins the next chapter in Peter Parker’s story. While the previous films were often connected to travel, Tony Stark’s technology and major events within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the hero is now returning to the streets of New York.

Peter has become older and more independent, while the story itself is noticeably more serious. He no longer has the familiar support of his mentors, meaning he must rely on his own abilities far more often.

At the same time, the film does not abandon the familiar elements of Marvel. Hulk and the Punisher appear alongside Spider-Man, but Peter and the consequences of the decision he made at the end of No Way Home remain at the centre of the story.

The film runs for 2 hours and 25 minutes, making it one of the longest solo Spider-Man films.

About the Director

The film was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. He previously directed Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which audiences remember for its spectacular hand-to-hand combat and combination of superhero action with family drama.

Cretton’s filmography also includes Short Term 12, The Glass Castle and Just Mercy.

Brand New Day was written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. They also worked on the three previous solo Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland.

Cast

Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker. This is his fourth solo Spider-Man film and his seventh appearance as the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Zendaya once again plays MJ, while Jacob Batalon returns as Ned Leeds. After the ending of No Way Home, their characters do not remember Peter, meaning their relationships effectively begin again from scratch.

Jon Bernthal returns as Frank Castle, better known as the Punisher. Mark Ruffalo once again appears as Bruce Banner and the Hulk.

The film also stars Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman and Michael Mando. Mando previously appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming as criminal Mac Gargan.

How Was the Film Received?

The first reviews of Spider-Man: Brand New Day have been largely positive. At the time of publication, the film holds a score of 90% from critics and 98% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. On Metacritic, it has received a score of 66 out of 100.

Critics have particularly praised the film’s more mature portrayal of Peter Parker, its spectacular action sequences and Tom Holland’s performance. Many reviewers have also welcomed Spider-Man’s return to a more grounded story set on the streets of New York.
